“Cheap Bling Is Bad News”

After picking up a healthy living newsletter from a local health & fitness club, I was amazed about some of the findings. Among them, news on “cheap bling”.

Here’s what the article in Natural Awakenings (Aug 2012) has to say about the issue:

“Research from the Ecology Center, a nonprofit environmental organization, discloses that more than half of low-cost metal adult and children’s jewelry contains large amounts of toxic chemicals, including lead, cadmium, nickel, chromium, and chlorine (from polyvinyl chloride, or PVC). The report notes that these chemicals have been linked in animal and some human studies to acute allergies and long-term health impacts such as birth defects, impaired learning, liver toxicity, and cancer. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, young children should not be given or allowed to play with cheap metal jewelry, especially when unsupervised.”

This may be a reason to opt for quality over quantity; be careful about your purchases. Cheaper is not always better, especially knowing this. I remember my younger cousin used to get allergies from nickel-based belts, earrings, necklaces, etc. from stores that we commonly see at U.S. malls. I am not sure I can directly mention which stores are crimes of these types of products, but I am sure you (especially the ladies!) can imagine which ones…you may end up having side effects that SEAL the deal for FOREVER health problems…I know that was a little cheesy but you get what I mean 🙂

Keep in mind, your skin, the largest organ of your body, ABSORBS chemicals, lotions, etc. through its pores. If you wear something all day long, and it has some chemical which is able to pass through your pores, washing your skin with soap is not going to help you. It’s already in your body.

Pesto Penne Recipe

Ingredients:

2% reduced fat milk

100% whole grain penne pasta

salt

pepper

garlic (to your desire…I use 3-4 cloves)

broccoli

1 chicken breast

pesto

2 tbsp olive oil

2 tbsp margarine

3 tbsp Parmesan

Boil a large pot of water and throw in a dash of salt. Cook the pasta for about 11 minutes or until done.

Trim off any excess fat on the chicken breast. I like to put the cut up garlic on the breast as I cut it into small pieces.

Saute the chicken and garlic in the olive oil and butter until almost cooked.

Reduce the heat: add salt, pepper, milk, & pesto

Stir, cook until done. Add the broccoli (and optional: heat it very lightly to keep a fresh balance!)

Sprinkle Parmesan cheese to your desire per plate.

**I recommend having a salad and some cooked zucchini along with the pasta to balance it out.**

Sorry, I forgot to take a picture of it when I made this last! Will post when I get a chance next time!

Mood Lifters

The Truth: Everyone deserves to be happy!

1. Even if you don’t feel like it, SMILE. Exercising these facial muscles will uplift mood–proven fact.

2. Get moving. Exercise helps get the blood flowing.

3. Catch some sunshine! Step outside and soak in the sun.

4. Have a handful of cashews–similar side effects of Prozac, Paxil, etc.

5. Help someone else.

6. Be around animals!

7. Get out of those sweats and dress up a little! When you look good you feel good.

8. Push those negative thoughts aside and think positively — “We are what we think.” — Buddha

Diet: Folate, vitamins B12 and B6, and unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids are important to incorporate into your diet to keep your mood balanced–deficiency in these can lead to depression [1].

The Solution: Use these alternatives before turning to poor health choices!
E.g. don’t pull out a cigarette to make yourself feel better, take a breath and try out one of these tips first because the ciggy isn’t solving your problems either!
E.g. don’t be so hard on yourself — take a break!!

Natural Household Cleaners

The Truth: There’s a reason you get light-headed when you use these toxic chemicals to clean….

Here’s a page I scanned from a book called “You Can Make A Difference–be environmentally responsible” by Judith Getis

I haven’t tested out these yet, but I plan to soon : )

Solution: Try some alternatives! Save your health, $, & the environment!

Great Way to Get Your Greens In!

The Truth: You need to get those greens in!

Ingredients:

Spinach (lettuce has little/no nutritional value)

Tomatoes

Broccoli

Cucumbers

Carrots

Sunflower seeds

Almonds

Cashews

Italian Dressing (supposedly the Wishbone one helps absorb certain vitamins)

Keep the dirty dozen in mind when making this mix!

I find it’s easier to eat a salad if I make it the night before or beforehand…then there’s no excuse not to have it! This recipe is simple, easy, and fast.

Another great idea is to take these ingredients, get whole grain bread/tortilla, some mayo and a slice of mild cheddar with some onions and make a sandwich/wrap! Delicious!

Solution: Make this recipe a salad, sandwich, or wrap!
